Less is More #365 – Dry embossing

Bonjour !

Oui !

Hello !

Yes ! It is still party time at Less is More ! If you have been following us these last fifteen days, you already know that we are celebrating the 7 years of the challenge blog. This fortnight, we welcome our second sponsor as well as our special Guest Designers. I let you go on the main blog to discover all the information.

For this fortnight, we ask you to sparingly use, to remain CAS, dry embossing.

We are delighted to welcome Tara from Seven Hills Crafts who is our generous sponsor for this challenge.

As you already know it, there are several ways to dry embossing : embossing folder, stylus, scoring board, die embossing, die cuts dry embossing. These are the techniques that I know at the moment but I would be very happy to discover new ones if you have some to propose us.

1/ Happy new year / Xīnnián kuàilè

For this card I used the simplest technique, the embossing folder one.

Yesterday it was the first day of the Chinese New Year. So I made a card in honour of my Asian friends. Happy new year !

I used an embossing folder on a gold cardstock (gold is the symbol of nobility and wealth). In order to keep the card CAS, I cut only a small part of the embossing to adhere it onto the double red card (red is the colour announcing a happy event and also the symbol of prosperity and happiness).

I die cut the word “happy” and I stamped with black ink the end of the sentiment. Finally, on the top of the card I tied a golden thread and I tied ingots at the extremities (this augurs good fortune !).

Stamp: Uniko “festive sentiments” – Die: STAMPlorations “Happy” – Embossing folder: Spellbinders M-Bossabilities “EL 022”.

2/ Happy birthday

For this card I also used an embossing folder. I cut a strip of paper that I dry embossed and then I had fun by watercolouring the debossed parts.

I cut a black strip of paper a bit larger than the embossed strip and I adhered it onto a double white card. I attached the embossed strip above it.

I die cut the “happy” word in two shades of pink and I adhered them slightly offset on the card.

The sentiment “birthday” is stamped and white embossed over black paper.

I made this card for my friend Anita from My Papercraft World who is celebrating her birthday tomorrow. So do not hesitate to go on her blog to not only admire her beautiful cards but also to leave her a nice message for the occasion.

Update : Happy and honoured to be one of the Design Team Picks at Stamp, Ink, Paper challenge !

Stamp: Uniko “happy succulent” (sentiment) – Die: STAMPlorations “Happy” – Embossing folder: Couture Creations “Compassionate” – Inks: Distress “Picked raspberry, Spun sugar, Tumbled glass” – Embellishments : Pretty Pink posh “clear droplets 4 mm”.

For this card I used the technique of die embossing. According to the machines, the “sandwich” can vary. I used a Big Shot and the “sandwich” is the following : Multi-purpose platform tab 2 open + clear plate + thin embossing mat + paper + die blade down + clear plate. The best is to try and adjust according to the machines.

For the coloured succulente, I die cut the shape in cardstock and I used it as a stencil. I fussy cut it and I foam mounted it.

Stamp: Simply Graphic “planche un petit coucou” – Die: Simply Graphic “Succulente” – Inks: Distress “Cracked pistachio, Wilted violet”.

  1. Visiting late… As I wrote you in my email I was busy for a couple of weeks and am now catching up on commenting! 🙂 Anyway, great job with your dry embossed cards! All are perfect examples for CAS style. I especially love the third card with the embossed flower images -I have one flower die that might work, I have to try this! Thank you for the inspiration!

  2. You have given us a real treat for this challenge Izzy with such super-crisp embossing on all your designs. The Chinese New Year card is superb with it’s bold, vibrant colour and that super Chinese symbol on the luxurious pearl card. I’m bowled over by your second card with its beautiful colouring and gorgeous feminine look. Then you give us such a wonderful CAS design on the third card. Fantastic inspiration from you this week. Sorry I am late popping over to see you – it is chaos and very busy here getting our house ready to put onto the market for sale. xx

  3. Incredible as ever, Izzy! Your first one is the perfect representation of the Lunar New Year celebration. The gold tassels is an awesome finishing touch. I never knew the reasons behind the red and gold even though my parents celebrate. 😂 And both your floral cards are gorgeous and beautifully coloured. Love the fact one uses an EF and the other a die, Fantastic inspirations! xx

  4. Oh no! I completely forgot about the lunar New Year and making a card for it as I have done in the past few years! Yours is gorgeous, love that embossing folder! The softly watercolored card for Anita is lovely and therefore perfect for her! I have recently played with the embossing with dies technique but I tend to use the debossed side. Your succulent card shows me how pretty the embossed side looks! Thanks for inspiring!

  5. A beautiful Chinese New Year card. The embossing is the perfect touch. Love the frayed gold thread with the fun embellishments. Thanks for joining us at Watercooler Wednesday.

    Bises.

  7. The richness of the red with the subtle gold texture-y sheen is fabulous on your new year card, Isabelle … super CAS succulents, so pretty … and my favourite, which I’ve been admiring here since yesterday, that beautifully watercoloured embossing! It looks wonderful enough here on your blog … IRL is absolutely gorgeous … and the layered happy is perfect with it! Thanks so much, once again, for thinking of me on my special day … and for your lovely (and so generous) shout out! Tres bonne semaine, my friend! Bises and hugs, Anita 🙂

  8. What beautiful cards, Isabelle! I especially love the one which you’ve made for the Chinese New Year. The colours really capture the traditional colours while the dry embossed images really do have that oriental look to them. I love the way you’ve created this card, keeping it clean and simple, and yet including so much lovely detail. The tassels really finish it up beautifully and make this a “wow” card. Thanks so much for joining our Watercooler Wednesday Challenge this week.

  9. Thanks so much for joining us for the Watercooler Wednesday “All About Occasions” challenge this week Izzy. Your Happy New Years card is really wonderful and your Asian friends will love it. I like how you’ve captured the symbolism of each part and told us the story behind it. The gold embossed panel is so rich and wonderful and I love the bold sentiments against the red panel. Every part of this CAS card is wonderful! Thanks for sharing.

  10. I love your oriental design, Izzy – that embossing folder looks so crisp on the gold and works perfectly with the rich pink. Your watercoloured floral panel is so soft and pretty and I love your embossing with dies on your third card too. Such great ideas to inspire us all for this challenge 🙂

  11. Fabulous cards, Izzy! The first one is so rich and striking, and I LOVE the tassles! Your floral cards are incredibly pretty and I love the soft colours you’ve chosen <3 Beautiful. Thanks for sharing!

  12. What great techniques, Izzy. You’ve captured the oriental feel perfectly on your first one. I ADORE your second card, those pretty florals look beautiful, I must give this idea a go. And well done by combining embossing/cutting/stencilling on your third card, a complete triumph! Hugs xx

  13. A trio of thoughtful, classy and elegant dry embossed cards Izzy. So much detail and thinking behind your first card in honour of your Asian friends and beautifully put together. The watercoloured embossed image is such an inspiration that I need to give that a go at some point then perfect use of your stash on the third one with the little stencil twist too using the same die. Great ideas throughout and have a fun week x
